I'm an early owner and proponent of the e602.....I recall a thread in the last several months saying that the e602II construction was not as durable as the original, don't know if there's a difference in sound. I have an e602. I have assumed it was the origional because it was the only one I knew about. they dont make the e602 any more, just the II. Few people would disagree that the Sennheiser e602 is as good as anything out there. Among top industry professionals, the Sennheiser MD441 U is every bit as legendary as the MD421. It sounds a quite bit different then the 602...more 250-300Hz chopped out which is sometimes cool....and sometimes not. i had an original 602 and when my studio partner moved and took it with him, i got a new one. You simply lay it on the pillow inside the kick drum, and when used in combination with a standard kick drum mic such as the e602, you get a beautiful tone unlike any other. The Sennheiser E 902 is supposed to be Sennheiser's successor to the very nice and interesting E 602. I usually prefer it over a 602 on a kick drum but not on anything else. It sounds really good on kick drums, bass cabinets, and pretty much any low frequency instrument you can think of. Especially compared to the Beta 52a I typically use.
